There are also English reading, writing and speaking tests, and special rules for some older applicants (USCIS). Free study materials: USCIS study guides.
Fees (checked October 17, 2026)
The Form N-400 fee is $760 on paper or $710 online. A reduced fee of $380 is available on paper if your household income is below 400% of the federal poverty guidelines, and some people qualify for a fee waiver (USCIS N-400, reduced fee). In June 2026, DHS proposed raising the fee to $1,330 (paper) / $1,280 (online) and ending the reduced fee and fee waivers. That proposal was not final as of October 17, 2026 (Federal Register). Check the current fee before you file.
Talk to a lawyer first if…
Applying for citizenship can raise problems for some people, for example past arrests or convictions, long trips outside the U.S., or questions about how you got your green card. If any of these apply, talk to a licensed attorney or a DOJ-accredited representative before you file. See our free legal help list. Never use a "notario."
